When you have the ingredients to make a perfect recipe, you know it. It is going to be a one heck of a dish.

When I was talking with Dan Cuny from Profoto about buying the D1 Series as my first investment on lights, I was also eyeing on putting my hands on revolutionary B1 Air TTL on location lights. I was one of the first few women photographers who got to use and review the lights for the weekend. Lucky for me I use Canon Camera which is compatible with B1 remote.

We decided on the dates and now it was my turn for a good Photo Production. Sal from City Model Management was extremely helpful. I am all about women empowerment and yes, Sal helped me find women athletes who were available the weekend of Thanksgiving at 6am with freezing 6° Celsius.

With an action stopping flash duration between 1/11000 sec – 1/1000 sec in Normal Mode, and 1/19000 sec – 1/1000 sec in Freeze Mode, as well as up to a blazing 20 flashes per second, the sky really is the limit.

I got the lights a day early, so planned and impromptu dancer shoot to get the feel a day before.

Day 1 – Saturday. I used the lights on a TTL Mode to really feel the difference and have the Profoto intelligence decide on the metering . With the Air Remote TTL controller, you can set the power from your camera’s position.

I am a Fan of Beauty Dish – it is a must have for every photographer. Below is the image I shot with 2 light head on either side

Day 2

We started to shoot early in the morning at 6:00 am and this time I wanted to use full power on the light. I love the fact that profoto is consistent in regards to light metering and white balance. For lights this lightweight it is extremely hard to believe that it could deliver the image that I could have got in the 7B packs.

This has light control in 1/10 stop increments and full f-stop. The quality of light you get is extremely marvelous.

We shot young and talented soccer player – Mellisa Ramos from City Modeling Agency in San Francisco. She was a trooper shooting early at 6:00am at 45° F. You have to applaud the spirit.

Overall this is a great investment for people who shoot on location. You will have to buy extra batteries if you shoot at full power which gives 200 flashes. On side note, they have a car battery charger so you can charge it when your model is getting ready.

Here are some behind the scenes for you to enjoy.
